FRANK STELLA's abstract use of color and shape

Not many better examples of artists using color and shapes to create dynamic work!!! Look at the combinations of color and how they "shimmer" or react on the surface.... Also, notice that Stella's work changed from flat work to 3D sculptures as he got older (and wiser?).

See more about him here...

William Morris' Textile prints

Morris is well known for his organic designs, used in textiles, wall paper, ceramics and other decorative areas...
Look for ideas to apply to your block print design..

BLOCK PRINTING...

Let's combine out knowledge of shape and pattern with color, by creating a three color block print.

We  first need to design a pattern, which flows off each edge of the foam block and "connects" with a print of the same block on either side...

Here is the handout...

Let's get into using the pencil to create a range of VALUES to make the illusion of depth. First, you have to create a design of SHAPES to break up the page into organic, mechanical and symbolic forms. Each form will be filled in with VALUES.
Here's the handout- and some ideas for shapes..

Mechanical shapes...

Symbolic shapes

Organic shapes!!! Wow!

Kerri Szolusha

My artwork was a rendition of Carolina by Jacob Collins. This was an assignment to further my own personal interest in art, and I wanted to refine my skills. I believe that the shoulder was the best part of my drawing because I worked the hardest on it, and it took the most time. I refined it multiple times until I felt that it looked both anatomically correct, and true to the original artist's work.
